Okino shaken, but hitting ball 'so good'

Hawai'i pro Casey Nakama, whose Casey Nakama Golf Development Center has produced many of Hawai'i's finest juniors, is caddieing for his student, 14-year-old Cyd Okino, at the U.S. Women's Open. Nakama, who also coached Michelle Wie in her formative years, is writing a diary for The Advertiser and had these thoughts after Okino's round was called because of darkness yesterday.

Okino is at 8-over for the tournament with four holes remaining this morning. Wie (10-over) and Hilo's Kimberly Kim (8-over) are playing together and have one hole left.

We were doing really well, Cyd was playing real good — 1-under after the first six holes, then the rain delay came. She had only 30 feet for birdie on the seventh when they stopped it, but she had a hump to negotiate and with the rain on the greens it slowed down a lot. We didn't make the adjustment when we came back and she three-putted.

The next hole (220-yard par-3) she caught a bunker and got up and down and we were back in it. But she hit her one bad tee shot on No. 9, missed the fairway by two yards — it was the only fairway she missed on the front — and we were dead. She had to hack a hybrid up the fairway, had 90 yards into the green and didn't get to the proper deck so the ball rolled back. She pitched to eight feet and missed that so she doubled. A lot of air went out her sail right there.

She hit a good tee shot on the (par-5) 10th and we had a chance to take a gamble from 225 yards, but there was a pond on the right. I said we need about four birdies and she contemplated a little, but didn't feel comfortable. The double bogey shook her up a little. She laid up and then had her first bad swing with a short iron, missing right.

Cyd parred 11 and 12, getting up and down from the bunker. On the 13th she hit her third shot to 20 feet and made the birdie. On the next hole she hit a 3-iron right in there about 20 feet. I thought she made the putt but it missed and then they called it. It was almost 9 p.m.

Four holes left at 8-over ... theoretically she could birdie out and make it because the cut seems to be at 4-over now. The leader is at 6-under so the USGA rule says if you're within 10 shots you make it. But ... one of our smaller goals was to make it to Saturday and we kind of did.

Oh man, she was hitting the ball so good. At this point it's just going to be the maturity of her mental game. She's getting some experience at big tournaments and getting used to this environment. I'm sure it's tough for any of the girls to get used to this type of tournament because so much is going on. A little more tournament maturity and Cyd definitely has enough game to be competitive here. I'm excited to see how this plays out. She's only 14 and getting this great experience. It's not the only Open she will play in.

We saw Michelle after, at 10-over, and she was not a happy camper. Kimberly is struggling too. It was a tough day.
