MAUNALUA MAKAI WATCH TRAINING: Free training sessions equip volunteers to learn about and kokua Maunalua Bay. Sign-up deadline July 3; training sessions 9 a.m.-1 p.m. July 12, 19 and 26 at East O'ahu location to be announced. Volunteers must be 16 or older, and be able to commit to volunteering at least four hours a month for one year. Topics include: history of Malama Maunalua (www.malamamaunalua.org); Maunalua Bay history and geography; basic ecology of Maunalua Bay (resources, major threats and restoration strategies); existing bay regulations and common violations; identification of fish and limu species; biological monitoring; human use monitoring; and alien algae removal projects. INVASIVE SPECIES REMOVAL: 8 a.m.-3 p.m. July 5. O'ahu Invasive Species Committee will hike the Judd Trail to remove the invasive chandelier tree (Medinilla magnifica), an evergreen shrub. Intermediate hike; participants must bring two quarts of water and lunch and wear long sleeves and sturdy shoes. RSVP by July 3 to Julia Parish at oisc@hawaii.edu or 286-4616. All participants must sign a waiver.

KAHALU'U COMMUNITY CLEANUP: 8 a.m.-2 p.m. July 12 at Kahalu'u Regional Park, 47-200 Waihe'e Road, organized by KEY Project. Recyclers will be at the site to accept scrap metal, car parts, bicycles, washers, stoves, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, newspaper, cardboard, beverage containers, automobile tires (limit four per household), cooking oil, used eyeglasses and hearing aids, green waste, batteries, useable clothing and household goods, cell phones, printer cartridges, telephone books, magazines, and one computer per household. Items not accepted are TVs, microwave ovens, business computers, paint or hazardous fluids. Items should be separated by type. KALIHI STREAM CLEANUP: 8:30-11 a.m. July 12, behind Kalihi Waena Elementary School, 1240 Gulick Ave. KAUPA, the Kalihi Ahupua'a Ulu Pono Ahahui, cleans in and around Kalihi Stream the second Saturday of each month. More information: 853-2218 or KAUPA@googlegroups.com.

TRAIL GRANT PROGRAM: The American Hiking Society, a private organization, is offering grants to help maintain hiking trails through its 2009 National Trails Fund. The 10-year-old fund awards grants of up to $5,000. For more information, go to www.AmericanHiking.org. Application deadline is Aug. 15.

CONSERVATION CONFERENCE: Volunteers needed for 2008 Hawai'i Conservation Conference July 29-31. WEED & POT CLUB: Maui Nui Botanical Garden's Weed & Pot Club meets from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesdays at 150 Kanaloa Ave. in Kahului to weed, rake, trim or transplant nursery plants, and perform other beautification and maintenance work. Tools, gloves and drinking water provided; bring sunscreen, wear shoes.

NATIONAL GARDEN HELP: Protect rare plants and ecosystems by volunteering at National Tropical Botanical Garden on Kaua'i. Help needed in administration, conservation, education, development, gardening support and special events, with north and south shore positions available.
