Pahoa man dies after collision in Puna district

A Pahoa man died Saturday night from apparent injuries suffered earlier in a two-vehicle collision at a Hawaiian Beaches intersection in the Big Island's Puna district.
Jonathan W. Tripp-Andrade, 20, died at Hilo Medical Center at 10:45 p.m., according to Big Island police traffic investigator Sgt. Christopher Gali.
Police said Tripp-Andrade's 1989 Honda sedan collided with a 2008 Chrysler sport utility vehicle making a left turn from Kahakai Boulevard onto Opelu Street at 6:31 p.m. The driver of the Chrysler, a 54-year-old California woman, and her three passengers — a woman, 72, and two boys, 15 and 13 — were not injured.
Speed appeared to be a contributing factor, police said. The accident marks the Big Island's 13th traffic death this year.
MAN CHARGED IN KAUA'I DRIVE-BY
A 26-year-old man has been charged with attempted first-degree murder in connection with a Friday night drive-by shooting at a McDonald's restaurant in Kapa'a, Kaua'i.
The man, who was not identified, was being held without bail at the police cellblock in Lihu'e, authorities said yesterday. A boy, 17, arrested with the man was sent to the Alder Street juvenile detention facility in Honolulu pending Family Court action.
The pair were arrested at Lyd-gate Park shortly after the 11 p.m. shooting was reported. No injuries were reported, but the restaurant was damaged.
2 YOUTHS SOUGHT FOR SHOTS AT TRUCK
Police last night were searching for two youths, 17 and 18, suspected of firing shots at a truck carrying 10 people early yesterday morning.
Eight of the passengers in the truck were minors, according to a police report. The truck driver was said to be 23. No one was injured.
Truck passengers told police they were being driven on a highway between Sand Island and Hickam Air Force Base at 1:40 a.m. when they noticed they were being followed by three vehicles.
Police said the two suspects allegedly had guns and fired at the victims before driving away.
1 CRITICAL AFTER BRAWL; 3 ARRESTED
Three men were arrested late Saturday night on suspicion of attempted murder and second-degree assault in Wahiawa, police said.
The men, 23, 25 and 21, allegedly struck three people with blunt objects, sending one to a hospital in critical condition and the other two to a hospital for treatment, police said. Bryan Cheplic, Emergency Services spokesman, said all three were taken to The Queen's Medical Center.
According to police, two groups of males got into an argument that escalated into a fight.
A 20-year-old man was struck in the head and knocked unconscious. The other victims, both 21, also were struck before the suspects fled, police said.
The incident occurred at 10:25 p.m. in the Wahiawa area. Two of the suspects were arrested 45 minutes later on the 200 block of California Avenue. The third suspect was arrested at 11:45 p.m. in front of 227 California Ave.
