Firefighters assist exhausted hiker in Waianae

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Fire Department's helicopter and rescue specialists today assisted a hiker in Wai'anae, bringing the man safely down from a mountain ridge on the north side of the valley at about 4:30 p.m.

HFD spokesman Capt. Robert Main said the man appeared to be suffering from heat exhaustion and could not complete his hike. The man's son hiked down and called for emergency assistance at 3:27 p.m.

Using global positioning system equipment with location information provided by the son, HFD's helicopter was able to locate the hiker. A rescue specialist attended to the man and secured him in a basket to be transported to waiting Emergency Medical Services personnel, said Main.
