Brushfire continues to burn on Big Island

Advertiser Staff

A brushfire has burned approximately 600 acres of land so far on the Hawaiian Homelands Forrest Reserve on the Big Island.

The Hawai'i County Fire Department said the fire is 14 1/2 miles from Mauna Kea and they are now in the third day of fighting the blaze. Cause of the fire is suspicious, according to the firefighters' report.

Big Island firefighters have been using helicopters to drop water on the blaze and dozers to create breaks. Hakalau Forrest Reservation personnel and facilities as well as Pokahuloa Personnel have assisted the firefighters.

The firefighting will resume at first light.
