Maui police today identified the Wailuku man killed Saturday night in a car crash on North Kihei Road in Ma'alaea as Kovack Haole.

Haole, 34, was driving a 2002 Honda Accord toward Wailuku that veered off the right shoulder of the roadway and collided with a utility pole at 11:36 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 41-year-old male passenger in the car is hospitalized at Maui Memorial Medical Center, where his condition has been upgraded from critical, police said.

Haole's death was Maui's fourth traffic fatality of the year.
