Sewage spill closes Kauai road for 90 minutes

WAILUA HOMESTEADS — Kainahola Road between Kainahola Reservoir and the Kapa'a Poi Factory on Kaua'i was closed today for 90 minutes after a septic truck crashed and spilled untreated raw sewage onto the roadway at 12:03 p.m.

Police and the Kaua'i Fire Department HazMat team responded to the incident along with state Department of Health officials.

It is not known how much raw sewage spilled on the roadway, but the truck carried 3,200 gallons, county spokeswoman Mary Daubert said in a news release.

A 46-year-old Kapa'a woman, who was driving the truck, was treated for minor injuries at Wilcox Hospital, Daubert said. Police suspect speed was a contributing factor for the crash.

According to police, the woman lost control of the truck and crashed. The truck rolled over on its side and spilled the raw sewage onto the roadway.
