The eight winners of the 2008 Hawaii Youth Concerto Competition, who range in age from 14 to 17 and attend high schools across O'ahu, will perform with the Honolulu Symphony in a family-friendly concert at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 28 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall.

At the Youth Concerto Concert with the Symphony, each young musician will perform one movement from their competition performance piece. Conducted by Maestra Ann Krinitsky, musical highlights include a selection of masterworks by Saint-Saens, Bruch, Lalo, Dvorak and Rachmaninoff.

Tickets for the Youth Concerto Concert tickets are $10, on sale at all Ticketmaster outlets (877-750-4400) and Times Supermarkets.

The competition phase of the HYCC took place in January 2008 and saw nearly 40 competing for a soloist position. Piano judges included Symphony violinist and conductor Ann Krinitsky, Symphony principal clarinet Scott Anderson, and University of Hawaii faculty member and pianist Wendy Yamashita. Instrumental judges included Ann Krinitsky, Scott Anderson, and Symphony concertmaster Ignace Jang.

The winners also have the opportunity to perform on Hawaii Public Radio in a "Live from the Atherton" program from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26.

In this live broadcast, Hawaii Public Radio Music Director Gene Schiller will interview the winners before each plays an excerpt from his or her winning performance.

The program will be heard simultaneously on KHPR 88.1 Honolulu, KKUA 90.7 Wailuku and KANO 91.1 Hilo. Pianists will perform on the Atherton's Bosendorfer grand piano. Sanders Piano will provide the second piano heard on the broadcast.
