Hawaii Democrats award presidential delegates

Advertiser Staff

The Democratic Party of Hawai'i today released the final results of the party's caucuses last month, awarding 14 delegates to U.S. Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois and six delegates to U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York based on a presidential preference poll.

The party's remaining nine delegates to the Democratic National Convention in Denver in August are superdelegates made up of elected leaders and party officials.

Superdelegates have the discretion to choose their preferred candidate at the convention.

Obama, who was born in Hawai'i and graduated from Punahou School, received 28,472 votes statewide. Clinton received 8,846 votes. The vote total was a record 37,519, which includes ballots cast for other candidates and uncommitted votes.

The vote total is slightly higher than the party reported after the caucuses. Party leaders found that some of the votes had been counted incorrectly, but the error did not change the results in any state House District or influence the delegate split.
