NFL: Packers speak with Trent Green

By Greg A. Bedard and Bob McGinn
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Free-agent quarterback Trent Green spoke to the Green Bay Packers today, and although there was mutual interest between the two sides, that phone call will likely be the extent of their relationship.

"I'm not sure that the timing is conducive to any immediate results," said Jim Steiner, Green's agent.

Green, a former starter with the Washington Redskins, St. Louis Rams, Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins, has been medically cleared to resume playing after suffering concussions each of the previous two seasons. The 37-year-old has decided, with wife Julie, that he will definitely play again next season. Green has offers from the Rams and the New Orleans Saints.

The Packers are just at the start of their search for a player to back up new starter Aaron Rodgers, a source said. The Packers have yet to determine what kind of player they want for the job, be it an aging veteran or one who doesn't quite have as much mileage. The Packers will also decide whether they want a quarterback with a style similar to Rodgers, or something different.
