HILO
Teenager to be tried as adult in shotgun killing

Advertiser Staff

A Big Island man who was initially charged with murder in Family Court in a shotgun slaying in Puna last year has been indicted as an adult for murder in the case.

Malaki McBride was 17 when he allegedly shot 21-year-old Tyrone Torres in the head in Nanawale Estates subdivision as Torres sat in a car with McBride's ex-girlfriend on Feb. 25, 2007.

Family Court Judge Ben Gaddis ruled that McBride could be tried as an adult in the case, and a Hilo grand jury on Wednesday indicted McBride on charges of second-degree murder, use of a firearm in a felony and other charges.

If convicted, McBride faces a sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole.
