Bryan Clay leads heptathlon at world indoors in Spain

Castle High alum Bryan Clay won the first three events of the heptathlon to take the first-day lead at the IAAF World Indoor Championships today at Valencia, Spain.

Clay leads after four events in the heptathlon with 3,736 points. Roman Sebrle of the Czech Republic is second with 3,562 points, followed by Andrei Krauchanka of Belarus with 3,473.

The final three events — 60 meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000 meters — are tomorrow.

Clay, the 2004 Olympic silver medalist in the decathlon, opened today's competition with a victory in the 60 meters in 6.71 seconds. Andres Raja of Estonia was second in 6.95. Clay just missed his personal best of 6.65, set at the World Indoor Championships in Budapest 2004.

In the long jump, Clay had his season best with 7.75 meters (25 feet, 5 inches). Krauchanka was second with 7.63.

Clay set a personal best 16.21 meters (53 feet, 2 inches) in the shot put to beat out Dmitry Karpov of Kazakhstan (16.19).

Clay finished third in the high jump with his season best 2.09 meters (6 feet, 10 inches). Krauchanka was first with a 2.15, followed by Sebrle (2.12).
