Advertiser Staff

Sister Joan Chittister will discuss "Spirituality and Culture," the implications of culture on contemporary spirituality, at the latest lecture in the free Father Mackey Lecture Series, 4 p.m. April 6.

The lecture will take place at the Mystical Rose Oratory on the Chaminade University campus, 3140 Wai'alae Ave.

Chittister wrote more than 35 books and was the recipient of seven Catholic Press Awards.

Chittister also will hold a workshop retreat 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 5 in the Mystical Rose Oratory; $15 ($20 at the door).

HAUMEA, MARY: SACRED FEMININE

"Return of the Sacred Feminine," with Pualani Kanaka'ole Kanahele, the Rev. Matthew Fox and Luisah Teish, will be 7 p.m. March 28 at the chapel on the Punahou campus.

Kanahele will discuss Hawai'i's sacred feminine, which is Haumea — Mother Earth, the mother of Pele. In Christianity, the sacred feminine is Mary and, in many cultures, she has been depicted as the Black Madonna, which is the topic of the segment by Fox, an Episcopal priest. In West Africa, primordial feminine energy is the mystical vessel of creation, which will be discussed by Yoruba priestess Teish. The event is co-sponsored by the Interfaith Alliance Hawai'i.

Also, at 3 p.m. March 29 there will be a free dedication ceremony in which a statue of the Black Madonna created by Hawai'i sculptor Jerry Vasconcellos will be dedicated at Ala Kukui, Hana.

The Honolulu event costs $10 ($5 students), with tickets available at Native Books/Na Mea Hawaii at Ward Warehouse and Hilton Hawaiian Village.
