Warriors' new look shows our true colors

StoryChat: Comment on this story

For the University of Hawai'i's football program, the past few months have been filled with wrenching change — a popular coach quit after an undefeated regular season; the athletic director resigned amid a hail of criticism; some of the team's best talent moved on, leaving behind crumbling facilities.

In the midst of all this uncertainty, loyal fans might ask — actually they have asked, loudly and relentlessly — can't those people at UH do anything right?

So even small reassurances can go a long way right now. The new head coach, Greg McMackin, delivered some of that this week when he unveiled the new team uniforms, the product of a new multi-year apparel contract with Under Armour.

The silver helmets and silver-and-white road uniforms are gone, replaced with a look that brings back more of the traditional wearing of the green and "Hawai'i" proudly displayed in front.

Of course, looks aren't everything, and a well-designed jersey holds no promise of victory; but the return of Warrior green to its rightful place of prominence...well, it just feels right.

And given all the ways it could have gone wrong — witness the remarkable color palette of the Oregon Ducks, developed after two years of careful research — it's a comfort to know that for our own Warriors, good taste and good sense won the day.
