Bryan Clay, a Castle High alum now living in Glendora, Calif., won three of four events in the heptathlon yesterday to take the lead at the IAAF World Indoor Championships at Valencia, Spain.

Clay, the 2004 Olympic silver medalist in the decathlon, amassed 3,736 points. Roman Sebrle of the Czech Republic is second with 3,562, followed by Andrei Krauchanka of Belarus with 3,473. Donovan Kilmartin, Clay's U.S. teammate, is in sixth with 3,340.

The final three events — 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000 meters — will be held today.

Yesterday, Clay opened the competition by winning the 60 meters in 6.71 seconds, just missing his personal best of 6.65, set at the 2004 World Indoors in Budapest. Andres Raja of Estonia was second in 6.95.

Clay then won the long jump with 7.75 meters (25 feet, 5 inches), with Krauchanka placing second with 7.63.

Clay followed with a personal-best 16.21 meters (53-2) to capture the shot put, with Dmitriy Karpov of Kazakhstan a close second with 16.19.

Clay ended the day by placing third in the high jump with 2.09 meters (6-10). Krauchanka won with 2.15.
