Filming begins on movie about Princess Kaiulani

Advertiser Staff

The cameras began rolling today in Honolulu on a feature film about the life of Princess Ka'iulani. A title under consideration for the film is "Barbarian Princess."

The film, which is being produced by Matador Pictures and Island Film Group, stars Q'orianka Kilcher, who co-starred as Pocahontas in the 2005 film "The New World."

Filming will take place in England and Honolulu, including within the historic interior of 'Iolani Palace, former home of the Hawaiian monarchy.

One of the proposed titles, "Barbarian Princess," is intended to be an "ironic juxtaposition" because Ka'iulani stunned the American press of the day with her beauty and manners, said Ricardo Galindez of Island Film Group, in a press release.

The film begins in 1888, as the Hawaiian kingdom faces the threat of civil war and Princess Ka'iulani travels to England for safety. After Hawai'i's overthrow in 1893, the princess returned to Hawai'i to seek restoration of the monarchy.
