Maui meeting to discuss park rules, fee changes

Advertiser Staff

Maui County parks officials are holding a community meeting Monday at Kahului Community Center to inform the public about changes to community center reservation policies and proposed fee changes.

The meeting starts at 6 p.m. and the center in located at 275 Uhu St.

Officials will address a pilot program started in July 2007 which prohibits camping at permit offices by people trying to obtain a community center reservation one year in advance.

"The pilot program was developed to address potential safety hazards, both to park patrons and the general public," said Tamara Horcajo, County of Maui Parks and Recreation director. "In anticipation of spring scheduling, I would like to share the results of this pilot program with the public, and clarify the new rules to minimize misunderstandings as the department puts the new practice into place permanently."

Park officials are also seeking public comment regarding fee changes proposed for fiscal year 2009 for renting park facilities. Current facility rental rates are on a daily basis but the Parks Department is proposing an hourly fee.

"With the hourly fee, the facilities would be better utilized, and would allow more activities to occur," Horcajo said. "Another benefit of going to an hourly fee would be increased opportunities for the public to reserve facilities for their special occasions."
