Hawaii 9th-grader wins community-service award

Jordan Bayang has volunteered for the last five years at Camp Kokua, a summer service-learning camp sponsored by Ho`ala School, reading to preschool children, collecting clothes for a local shelter, picking up trash and educating others about the green sea turtle.

Ho`ala School 9th-grader Jordan Bayang won "excellence in community service" award from the Hawaii State National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

The award recognizes outstanding achievements in educational, humanitarian,

patriotic, historical, citizenship endeavors or environmental conservation. Bayang had volunteered for the last five years at Camp Kokua, a summer service-learning camp sponsored by Ho`ala School, reading to preschool children, collecting clothes for a local shelter, picking up trash and educating others about the green sea turtle. He also was recognized in 2007 as one of the state's top volunteers and received the 12th Annual Prudential Spirit of Community Award, a nationwide program recognizing young people for outstanding community service.
