PUBLIC READING HIGHLIGHTS POEM COLLECTION

"Uluhaimalama." It was the garden of Queen Lili'uokalani. Now it is a garden of poems — sometimes thorny, sometimes redolent and sweet, sometimes a challenge to navigate. The new collection of poems by Mahealani Perez-Wendt, published by Kuleana 'Oiwi Press, a small nonprofit press with three previous literary anthologies to its credit, will be premiered at a free public reading, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Art Auditorium. Perez-Wendt, who describes herself as "mother, daughter, poet, activist," juxtaposes modern life with historical subjects in a way that is as approachable as the sand on a gentle beach and as layered as the ocean beyond.
