College, careers on Kauai High's front burner

Kaua'i High School’s AVID program was designed to help underachieving high school students prepare for and succeed in college. Students in the program commit themselves to improvement and preparation for college.

Where: 3577 Lala Road, Lihu'e, Kaua'i District

Grade span: Nine through 12.

Enrollment: 1,214 students.

Race/ethnicity enrollment: Filipino, 30 percent; part-Hawaiian, 20 percent; other, 20 percent; white, 14 percent; Japanese, 12 percent; Hawaiian, 4 percent.

Free and reduced-price lunch eligible: 25 percent

Special-education students: 10 percent

Computers on campus: 400

Principal: Linda Smith, 18 years as principal.

School nickname: Red Raiders.

School colors: Red and White.

Well-known alumni: Gen. Eric Shinseki, painter/poet Reuben Tam.

What are you most proud of? "Promoting a schoolwide college/career culture and our mock trial accomplishments, which just won their 12th state championship this past weekend," said Smith, the school principal. "Our AVID program."

What is your biggest challenge? "Meeting and exceeding the Hawai'i State Assessments proficiency scores in all the subgroups," Smith said. "We also are constantly trying to provide more opportunities for students."

Special events: Leo Club, Key Club, Japanese Club, Filipino Club, Anime Club, Power Lunch, Red Cross Club, Skills USA, Math Mondays.

History: Kaua'i High School was the first school on the island in 1914. Initially it was called the Kaua'i High and Grammar School.
