Advertiser Staff

Scott Gorgen pitched one-hit ball over eight innings and Ollie Linton and Ben Orloff went a combined 7 for 9 with seven runs scored to lead No. 9 UC Irvine over Hawai'i, 9-0, tonight at Anteater Ballpark in Irvine, Calif.

The Rainbows' first hit didn't come until Kevin Macdonald's one out single in the seventh, the lone hit against Gorgen (3-1), who allowed a walk with nine strikeouts. Crosby Slaught allowed a single to Vinnie Catricala in scoreless ninth for the Anteaters (12-1). It was UCI's sixth shutout of the season.

UH starter Jared Alexader (2-2) gave up five runs and seven hits with no walks and four strikeouts in five innings for the Rainbows (7-10). Alex Capaul added two scoreless inniings, freshman Sean Soto made his season debut, allowing four runs in two-thirds of an inning and Sam Spangler pitched a third of an inning.

The Anteaters jumped on Alexander in the first. Ollie Linton led off with a single to right and took second on Ben Orloff's single to third. Linton and Orloff pulled off a double steal when Ryan Fisher struck out. Jeff Cusick's flare single to right scored Linton and sent Orloff to third, where he scored when Brock Bardeen grounded out to third to make it 2-0. Tony Asaro grounded out to short to end the inning.

UCI continued to small-ball UH. Linton led off the third with a single, stole second, took third when Orloff grounded out to second and was squeezed home on Fisher's sacrifice to make it 3-0.

The Anteaters padded their lead in the fifth. With one out, Linton reached on a bunt single to third and took third on a hit-and-run single to left by Orloff. Fisher's RBI single to right sent Orloff to third, where he scored when Jeff Cusick grounded out to second, making it 5-0, before Brock Bardeen struck out.

UCI increased its lead in the eighth against Soto. Sean Madigan tripled to right-center and one out later, scored on Aaron Lowenstein's double to left, making it 6-0. Linton walked and Orloff singled to right to load the bases. After Fisher struck out, Cusick' three-run double made it 9-0. Soto was pulled for Sam Spangler.
