UH softball sweeps

Courtney Baughman pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts as 16th-ranked Hawai'i beat visiting Texas, 8-0, in five innings last night in the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament.

Tanisha Milca, Kaulana Gould and Valana Manuma each had two RBIs for Hawai'i. Tallie Thrasher had two hits for the Longhorns (12-10-1).

In the nightcap, Clare Warwick and Valana Manuma each had two RBIs to lead the Rainbow Wahine (20-6) over Maine (0-21), 6-3.

Kate Robinson (8-3) pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs. Jessica Morton pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief for the save.


BASEBALL

HPU BEATS PATTEN

Aaron Asher hit a grand slam and Hawai'i Pacific scored 12 runs in the first two innings, then hung on to beat Patten University, 13-9, last night at Hans L'Orange Field.

Johnny Gentry and Paul Nishimura each drove in two runs, and Kaimi Mead (4-0) yielded three hits and three runs while striking out five over five innings to earn the victory for the Sea Warriors (17-6).

Brett Korporaal had three RBIs for the Lions (2-20).

WAI'ALAE WINS AJA

Ryan Tanaka singled home AD Mols with two outs in the bottom of the 10th Wednesday as Wai'alae beat 'Ewa, 5-4, to win the O'ahu AJA title.

DIVING



WIKTORSSON QUALIFIES

University of Hawai'i senior Mats Wiktorsson qualified for the NCAA Championships yesterday by placing third in the 3-meter springboard at the NCAA Zone E Diving Qualifying Meet in Oklahoma City, Okla.

The top 3 finishers earned berths in the nationals.

UH teammate Magnus Frick, protecting an injured tricep, did only simple first-feet entries and finished 21st in the 21-diver field.

None of the three Rainbow Wahine qualified in the 1-meter event as Raquel Bartlow placed 14th, Stephanie Delima 16th and Emma Friesen 22nd.


GOLF

TAKARA, TOYAMA LEAD

Neal Takara and Travis Toyama each shot 2-under-par 70 at Pearl Country Club yesterday to share a one-stroke lead in the Hawai'i State Amateur Stroke Play Championship.
