UC Irvine completes sweep of baseball 'Bows, 13-4

Francis Larson and Ryan Fisher each drove in three runs in No. 8 UC Irvine's 13-4 romp of Hawai'i to complete a doubleheader sweep and three-game series sweep today at Anteater Ballpark in Irvine, Calif.

Christian Bergman (3-0) went five innings, allowing a run, four hits and a walk with four strikeouts for the Anteaters (14-1).

Nick Rhodes (0-2) lasted just one-plus innings, allowing six runs, seven hits and two walks for the Rainbows (7-12).

Larson was 3 for 4 with a two-run home run and RBI double, while Fisher was 3 for 5 with three RBI singles.

The Anteaters picked up where they left off in the opener, sending 11 batters to the plate in a five-run first against Rhodes. A two-run home run by Francis Larson and RBI singles by Ryan Fisher, Sean Madigan and Eric Deregisch accounted for the scoring.

The Rainbows managed a run in the top of the second with two outs. Jeff Van Doornum doubles and scored on Landon Hernandez's single to pull UH to 5-1.

UCI increased its lead in the second. Larson led off with a walk and Rhodes was pulled for Harrison Kuroda. Jeff Cusick's single sent Larson to third, where he scored on Fisher's single that stopped Cusick at second. Tony Asaro flied out to deep left that advanced both runners. But Kuroda walked Madigan to load the bases and hit Deregisch with a pitch to force across a run to make it 7-1.

The Anteaters scored in the third when Larson singled with one out and scored on Cusick's double to make it 8-1.

UCI continued its scoring in the fourth, when Madigan led off the inning with a home run to make it 9-1.

After not scoring in the fifth and sixth, the Anteaters made up for with a four-run seventh. Ollie Linton singled and scored on Larson's double. After taking third when Cusick grounded out to second, Larson scored on Fisher's single to center. Asaro followed with a two-run home run to center to make it 13-1.

The Rainbows added a run in the eighth when Shane Hoey doubled with one out, took third on a wild pitch and scored one out later on Vinnie Catricala's single to pull UH to 13-2.

Hawai'i had its first multiple-run inning of the series in the ninth, scoring two off Eric Pettis, UCI's fourth reliever of the game. Nate Young and Jon Hee each had RBI singles before Pettis struck out the last three batters to end the game.
