Manuma pitches Campbell past Kapolei in OIA softball

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

Campbell's Katie Manuma currently has three sisters playing NCAA Division I softball.

And she certainly looks talented enough to also reach the same level.

Manuma pitched a seven-hitter with zero walks and three strikeouts as host Campbell beat Kapolei, 8-1, in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West softball game yesterday.

"She was outstanding," said Campbell coach David Perreira. "She was hitting her spots. We had a game plan coming into the game against Kapolei. We felt we could exploit some weaknesses in their hitting and she did a good job mixing up her pitches and hitting her spots."

One of Manuma's sisters — Anita — graduated from Campbell and plays for Tennessee. Two other sisters — Malamaisaua and Valana — are Kapolei graduates now playing for the University of Hawai'i.

Manuma, a sophomore right-hander, threw 59 of her 82 pitches for strikes.

"My fastball was working good inside, outside; my drop, curve, riser," she said when asked which pitches were working for her.

Manuma recorded 13 outs on grounders, including one double play, and three more on pop-ups.

"We try to work on the low pitches so if they do hit the ball it goes down to the ground," she said.

Campbell (1-0) scored two runs each in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings. The Sabers took advantage of six walks, two hit by pitches, five wild pitches, four illegal pitches and four errors.

"They capitalized on every mistake we made," said Kapolei coach Tony Saffery. "Like every passed ball they scored on us, every bad throw we made, they advanced. They took advantage of all the mistakes we made."

The illegal pitches were assessed for stepping back after getting into the set position, according to Saffery. A ball is charged to the batter and the base runners, if any, move up one base for any violation.

Campbell had success against former teammate Kai Clark, a senior right-hander who transferred to Kapolei after last season.

Clark allowed six runs in 3 2/3 innings.

"She's just another Kapolei player. That's what I told the girls," Perreira said. "It's not we're facing Kai Clark, we're facing Kapolei. Let all that stuff go. She played with us before. She's a great player, but we just went out there and we were facing an opponent."

Loreen Egdamin, Randy Schoening and Gerika Pantohan each scored two runs for the Sabers.

Breanne Patton's two-run single in the third made it 4-0 Campbell, and the Hurricanes had a chance to answer in their next at-bat.

Deja Manubag and Ka'ili Smith led off with singles. Kailey Fernandez followed with a single to right, but Brittney Garcia threw a perfect strike home to catcher Anuhea Yamaguchi, who tagged out Manubag.

"It was just a great throw," Perreira said. "Brittney is just an intense player and she always wants to be the best out there. She always wants to be better than who she's competing against. She'll go hard 100 percent for seven straight innings."

Kapolei (1-1) finally broke through against Manuma in the sixth after Manubag hit a one-out single and Smith followed with an RBI double to right-center.
