After two weeks of Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball, there is only one undefeated team left standing and it is not four-time defending state champion Punahou.

Mid-Pacific stunned the Buffanblu, 12-7, yesterday before a crowd of about 250 at Ala Wai Field to improve to 4-0 in the ILH, good for sole possession of first place. Three-time defending league champ Punahou fell to 3-1.

The victory was even more impressive considering the Owls scored 10 runs off Buffanblu ace and reigning Advertiser State Player of the Year Jeeter Ishida, one day after defeating previously unbeaten Saint Louis.

"We came in confident, and I knew at some point our offense would just explode," said Mid-Pacific senior Mikey Nagamine, who went 3 for 4 with one run batted in and four runs scored. "We got on them early, and luckily it stuck with us."

The Owls took a 3-0 lead in the top of first inning, with all three runs coming after two outs.

Courtesy runner Bryson Chang scored when Derek Tan's sharp grounder to second base was mishandled with the bases loaded, then Nick Tasaka stroked a single up the middle to score Easton Torigoe and Nagamine.

MPI scored three more runs in the second — again with two outs — when Tan cleared the loaded bases with a double to right center field.

"We've never scored off of Jeeter," said Owls coach Dunn Muramaru, whose teams have faced Ishida the past three seasons. "The two-out hits, we haven't done that a lot. We jumped a whole bit today, compared to last year."

But Punahou, the sleeping giant, awoke in the bottom of the second.

Tyler Hanzawa's two-out single to center brought home Tyler Young from second base, and Matt Suiter drove in courtesy runner Landen Taga and Hanzawa with a single to right center before being thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.

Mid-Pacific pushed the lead to 8-3 in the top of the third after Mike Arakaki scored on Wade Tamaru's squeeze bunt and Aaron Fujiki pulled a line single to left to bring home Todd Nagamine with two outs.

But Punahou fought back again, with Reece Kiriu bringing home Geoffrey Kunita on a sacrifice fly to left in the third and then the Buffanblu closed it to 8-6 in the fourth after Kunita's infield single scored Hanzawa from third and Zach Kometani's fielder's choice grounder brought home Shane Yoshiyama.

"They kept having good at-bats," Muramaru said. "That's why I knew we had to try to get as many runs as possible."

Ishida settled down a bit, striking out the side in the fourth and shutting out the Owls in the fifth. But MPI's bats came alive again in the sixth, as Torigoe led off with a triple to center and scored on Mike Nagamine's single to right. Tan then brought home Nagamine with a single to center, ending Ishida's day with the score 10-6.

Pinch-hitter Stetson Sakamoto then singled to right to score Tan to make it 11-6. The teams traded runs in the seventh.

Sophomore right-hander Dylan Tawata, who entered with runners on second and third with one out in the third, was awarded the victory after allowing three runs in five innings of relief.

Punahou coach Eric Kadooka said Ishida "was fine," and credited the 6-0 deficit to the Owls.

"They hit the ball," Kadooka said. "Derek hit an 0-2 fastball (in the second inning), that was a clutch hit with two outs and the bases loaded. In this league, you just gotta move on after a loss. You can't dwell on one game."
