HPU baseball team sweeps Patten

Jacob Valentine had three hits, and Kevin Keogh and Michael Kealoha each drove in two runs as Hawai'i Pacific beat Patten University, 8-2, last night to complete a sweep of a non-conference doubleheader at Hans L'Orange Field.

Kevin Matsumoto worked four innings, giving up Derek Luque's two-run homer in the fourth, to earn the victory for the Sea Warriors (20-7). He gave up three hits while striking out three and walking two.

The Lions, from Oakland, Calif., fell to 3-24.

Earlier, Aaron Asher had three hits and two RBIs, and Kealoha added two hits and three RBIs as Hawai'i Pacific won, 11-3.

Danny Lee, Spencer Omalza and Paul Nishimura also paired hits for the Sea Warriors. Reliever Daniel Cox earned the win, pitching four scoreless innings of one-hit ball. He struck out two and walked one.

DeJuan Johnson had two hits, including a two-run single, for the Lions.

SAN DIEGO SWEEPS HILO

San Diego scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning to defeat Hawai'i-Hilo, 4-2, yesterday and complete a doubleheader sweep of a non-conference series at Wong Stadium.

James Meador had four hits, including an RBI single in the 10th, to lead the Toreros (11-7).

A.J. Satele sent the game into extra innings when he hit a solo homer with one out in the ninth for the Vulcans (7-9). Satele, Ronel Trias and Keoni Manago each had two hits and Michael Higa had an RBI single for Hilo.

"It's a never-say-die attitude," Hilo coach Joey Estrella said. "It doesn't matter how far this team is down, they're going to battle all the way."

In the opener, Brian Matusz pitched a five-hitter with nine strikeouts and one walk as San Diego won, 5-0.

Victor Sanchez had two hits and two RBIs for the Toreros. Joe Davis went the distance for the Vulcans, giving up eight hits and four earned runs while striking out five and walking none.


GOLF

TOYAMA TOPS AMATEURS

Travis Toyama, a University of Hawai'i senior and former Manoa Cup champion, shot a 1-over-par 73 yesterday to take a two-stroke lead after 54 holes of the Hawai'i State Amateur Stroke Play Championship.

Toyama is at 220. Neal Takara (76) is at 222, followed by 13-year-old Lorens Chan (73) at 223 and Kazuo Akimoto (70) at 224.

The final round tees off today at 11:17 a.m.

VANDY WINS ON KAUA'I

Vanderbilt shot a 54-hole total of 855 to win the Kaua'i Collegiate Cup yesterday at the Wailua golf course.

Oklahoma Christian finished second with 883 and Gonzaga was third with 893. Hawai'i Pacific finished last in the 11-school field with 977.

Vanderbilt's Hudson Johnson shot 63—210 to win the individual title by four strokes over three others.

Santiago Bueno shot 78—237 to tie for 42nd and lead Hawai'i Pacific.


WATER POLO

NO. 5 HAWAI'I WINS TWO

Kelly Mason scored three goals as fifth-ranked Hawai'i beat 17th-ranked UC Santa Barbara, 11-5, yesterday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Lisa van Raalte and Angela Turnbull each added two goals for UH (10-3 overall, 4-0 MPSF). Gillian Morgan and Christie Clark scored two goals apiece for the Gauchos (4-13, 0-7).

The Rainbow Wahine capped their home debut with a 12-7 non-conference victory over Cal Baptist.

Leonie Van Der Molen scored six goals for UH, which improved to 11-3. Chelsa Gentry scored four goals for Cal Baptist (18-6).

DIVING

3 'Bows head to NCAAs

Its remaining two divers failed to place high enough yesterday at the Zone E Qualifier to advance to the NCAA Championships, but Hawai'i's Mats Wiktorsson, Magnus Frick and Emma Friesen will again represent the Rainbows at the women's and men's nationals in the next two weeks.

Yesterday in Oklahoma City, sophomore Raquel Bartlow and freshman Stephanie De Lima missed out on qualifying in the platform. De Lima finished seventh with a score of 461.95, while Bartlow was 11th with 433.15.

Eight men and seven women advance out of each zone.

Wiktorsson qualified Thursday by taking third on the 3-meter springboard. Frick won the 1-meter Friday, while Friesen was third in the women's 3-meter.

Friesen, a sophomore from Canada, will compete in the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform events at nationals, beginning Thursday in Columbus, Ohio. Wiktorsson and Frick, seniors from Sweden, will compete in the same events beginning March 27 outside of Seattle.


SOFTBALL

HPU SWEEPS BYUH

Hawai'i Pacific swept a Pacific West Conference doubleheader from Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 12-2 and 5-0, yesterday at the BYUH Field.

Details of the games were not available.

The Sea Warriors improved to 15-0 overall and 6-0 in the PacWest. The Seasiders fell to 3-20 and 2-8.
