Texas softball beats No. 16 Hawaii, 5-0

Advertiser Staff

Texas knocked off host Hawai'i to reach the final of the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament, but could not stick around long enough to put away the championship last night.

The Longhorns played North Carolina for the title in a game that ended in a 1-1 tie after seven innings at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The teams had agreed on a time limit because Texas had a flight to catch.

Lisa Norris, selected the tournament's top pitcher, pitched a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts and one walk for North Carolina (24-6-1).

Brittany Barnhill and Meagan Denny teamed on a six-hitter with 10 strikeouts and two walks for Texas (14-10-2).

Whitney Allen drove in North Carolina's run in the bottom of the fourth; Barnhill drove in Texas' run in the seventh.

Earlier, Denny pitched a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts and no walks as Texas beat 16th-ranked Hawai'i, 5-0. Kacie Gaskin had two hits, including a two-run homer for the Longhorns.

Reliever Jessica Morton pitched 5 1/3 strong innings, allowing two hits and an unearned run while striking out two and walking none for the Rainbow Wahine (21-8).

Hawai'i will next host Northwestern, California, St. Mary's and Colorado State in this weekend's Bank of Hawai'i Invitational.
