North Shore surfer who died was Mililani man, 23

The surfer who died yesterday after being rescued at "Banzai Pipeline" Ehukai Beach was identified today by the Honolulu medical examiner's office as Joshua Kalai Nakata, 23, of Mililani.

An autopsy is scheduled tomorrow. Police has classified the case as an unattended death pending ME findings for cause and manner.

Nakata was pulled from the water by fellow surfers and brought to shore at 3:18 p.m. City lifeguards performed CPR until Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived. Nakata died at Kahuku Hospital.
