The Hawai'i State Department of Health's Healthy Hawai'i Initiative is holding Active Living Community Workshops in four locations along O'ahu's Leeward Coast. The first was held Saturday in Makaha. The others are:

  • Nanaikapono Elementary School (Nanakuli): today, 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.

  • Keone'ula Elementary School ('Ewa): tomorrow, 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.

  • Kapolei High School: Wednesday 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.

Active Living Communities are communities designed to provide opportunities for people to engage in routine daily physical activity and healthy eating.

In 2006, the adult obesity rate in the Nanakuli-Wai'anae area was 40.4 percent, double the state average of just over 20 percent. In the same year, adult diabetes prevalence in the area was 16.4 percent, compared to the state average of about 8 percent.
