UH's Robinson WAC softball hitter of week

Hawai'i senior first baseman/pitcher Kate Robinson was named Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week, the conference announced yesterday.

Robinson batted .421 in six games during the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament last week at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. She had team highs of six runs, eight hits, three home runs and six RBIs.

It was Robinson's fourth career WAC hitter of the week honor.

The Rainbows (11-3) open the Bank of Hawai'i Invitational with a doubleheader tomorrow against St. Mary's and Colorado State.


BASEBALL

SAN DIEGO BEATS UHH

Victor Sanchez went 2 for 4, including a three-run triple, to lead San Diego to a 9-4 victory over UH-Hilo yesterday at Wong Stadium.

The game was called after five innings because of San Diego's travel schedule. The Toreros (12-7) play UH-Manoa today.

Michael Higa went 3 for 3 and drove in two runs for UH-Hilo (7-11).


GOLF

'BOWS TIED FOR FOURTH

The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine are tied for fourth after the first day of the Donnis Thompson Invitational. The 'Bows shot 303 yesterday at Kane'ohe Klipper and are 17 shots behind leader Arizona, ranked seventh by GolfWeek.

Xyra Suyetsugu and Carolina Perez led UH with opening rounds of 75, tying for 16th. Corie Hou shot 76 to tie for 21st, while Lisa Kajihara shot 77 (T29) and Kimberley Marsden 83 (T72).

Arizona, which shot 2-under as a team, is five shots ahead of ninth-ranked Oklahoma State, with third-ranked Arizona State (301) third.

Alison Walshe, ranked sixth nationally, lifted Arizona with a 6-under-par 66 to take the individual lead. Waiakea graduate Amanda Wilson, Walshe's teammate, is alone in second at 71. They were the only players to break par.

University of Hawai'i-Hilo is 15th in the 16-team tournament after shooting 328. The Vulcans were led by Ki'ilani Matsuyoshi at 78.

Phyllis Lai led a group that played as individuals for UH, shooting a 77 to tie for 29th. Erin Matsuoka shot 82, tying for 66th. Kana Aikawa, former No. 1 for Rainbow Wahine tennis, had an 84 and is tied for 80th.

The tournament continues today at 7:30 a.m. and concludes tomorrow.


TRACK AND FIELD

WICHMANN HONORED

Annett Wichmann of the University of Hawai'i was named a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Women's Division I All-American.

Wichmann, of Jena, Germany, placed fourth in the pentathlon at last weekend's NCAA Indoor Championship in Fayetteville, Ark.

The last UH athlete to earn All-America honors was distance runner Cheryl Smith following her performance at the 2001 Outdoor Championships.
