A 63-year-old man was in critical condition yesterday after apparently trying to save a 4-year-old girl who had gotten into trouble at an Ala Moana condominium pool.

Police said the man was not conscious when he was taken to Straub Clinic & Hospital. The 4-year-old girl was revived at the pool and was in stable condition.

An Emergency Medical Services spokesman said the near-drownings happened about 1:52 p.m. at the pool at 1350 Ala Moana. Police Lt. Mark Boyce said the man and girl are related, but he could not immediately say how.

Boyce said the man, girl and a third man were at the swimming pool yesterday when the third man went to check the temperature of the jacuzzi.

When he returned, the other man was at the bottom of the pool and the girl was floating face-down at the top of the pool, Boyce said. Both were unconscious.

First responders believed the man jumped in after the girl, though he could not swim.
