Shizuya Hayashi, who was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2000 for valiant service as a World War II private in company A, 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team, will be laid to rest next Sunday.

Hayashi, of Pearl City, charged up a hill toward German positions on Nov. 29, 1943, killed 20 enemy soldiers and captured four near Cerasuolo, Italy.

On June 22, 2000, President Clinton awarded the nation's highest military award for valor to Hayashi and 21 other Asian-American veterans of World War II, most of them from Hawai'i.

Services at Hosoi Garden Mortuary will be limited to family and friends, veterans of the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team, general flag officers and designated representatives of other veteran, business, civic and military organizations. Other veterans, organizations and members of the public who wish to express condolences and pay respect may do so from 5:45 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific's Memorial Chapel, where Hayashi will lie in repose.

He is survived by a son, Grant; daughters, Mary Anne "Mimi" Nakano and Karen Kamimoto; and four grandchildren.
