STANFORD, Calif. — Jayne Appel is reminded each time she takes the court in Maples Pavilion of Stanford's most recent NCAA tournament disappointment. She wasn't about to be an upset again.

Appel dominated tournament first-timer Cleveland State, scoring 29 of her career-high 33 points in the first half to help the second-seeded Cardinal roll to an 85-47 first-round victory last night.

Appel shot 14 for 19, finished two shy of tying Stanford's NCAA tournament record and pulled down 12 rebounds in 25 minutes. The Cardinal (31-3) won their 19th straight game without relying on Pac-10 career scoring-leader Candice Wiggins.

She wound up with 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. She was whistled for a rare technical foul with 12:58 remaining.

"Our team knew to get the ball inside. That was the most nervous I've been all year," Appel said. "Candice got me in the right mind-set that we have defended Maples all year and we will continue to. That's what my team needed me to do."

A year ago, Stanford was knocked off by Florida State on its home floor on The Farm in the tournament's second round — and that still stings the Cardinal. They play at home again tomorrow against UTEP with a chance to advance to the Spokane Regional.

Kailey Klein had 16 points, five rebounds and four assists to lead Cleveland State (19-14), the 15th seed and Horizon League tournament champions.

"I talked about how special Maples is and don't let people come in and beat us in our own gym," Wiggins said.

Shavonte Zellous scored 21 points and the sixth seeded Panthers (23-10) held the 11th-seeded Cowgirls (24-7) scoreless over the final 4:03.

Chakhia Cole scored 22 points, including the game-winning jumper with 17.5 seconds left, as the fifth-seeded Mountaineers (25-7) edged the 12th-seeded Lobos (20-13).

Freshman Hannah Tuomi scored 14 points, Christina Wirth added 13 and Liz Sherwood had 12 to help the fourth-seeded Commodores (24-8) beat the 13th-seeded Lady Griz (25-7), who were held to a season low in points and had more turnovers (21) than field goals (15).
