NFL: Tampering 49ers must forfeit 5th-round pick

Advertiser Staff

The San Francisco 49ers must forfeit their fifth-round draft pick and switch spots with the Chicago Bears in the third round following tampering charges involving linebacker Lance Briggs.

The Bears filed tampering charges with the NFL when the 49ers contacted Briggs during the season without permission from the Bears.

Briggs re-signed with the Bears during the offseason.

Chicago now will have the seventh selection of the third round and San Francisco will have the 12th selection of the third round.

Commissioner Roger Goodell noted that both the 49ers and Bears fully cooperated with his investigation and hearing.
