Abubo fifth in surf; Manuel wins girls event

Advertiser Staff

Waialua's Megan Abubo tied for fifth in the Rip Curl Women's Pro surfing contest yesterday.

Abubo was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Australia's Stephanie Gilmore, who went on to win the contest.

The quarterfinals, semifinals and final were all run yesterday in 4- to 6-foot waves at Bells Beach, Australia.

Gilmore, the 2007 women's world champion, defeated Abubo, 11.83-8.83 in a heat that lacked quality waves.

Abubo was the only Hawai'i surfer remaining for the final day.

Also yesterday at Bells Beach, Kaua'i's Malia Manuel won the girls division of the Rip Curl GromSearch International Final.

Manuel beat two surfers from Australia and one from South Africa in the final. It is considered one of the top international events for girls 16 and younger.
