Woman, 59, killed in Kona traffic collision

Advertiser Staff

A 59-year-old Hilo woman died today from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle collision on the Big Island's Hawai'i Belt Road (Route 11), three-tenths of a mile south of the 99-mile marker in Kona.

Kona police said the woman was driving a 2005 Kia four-door sedan north on Route 11 when she crossed the center line and collided with a 2006 Kenworth cement truck traveling south. Police were notified at 7:01 a.m.

The woman was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where she died at 10:44 a.m.

The driver of the cement truck, a 52-year-old Ka'u man was not injured.

The victim's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Police suspect speed was a contributing factor. The death was the Big Island's 10th traffic fatality of 2008 as compared with nine at this time last year.
