HILO, Hawaii — A 59-year-old Hilo woman died today from injuries she suffered when her car crashed head-on into a cement truck in on Hawaii Belt Road in South Kona.

Police said the woman was south of the Hookena area near the 99-mile marker when the 2005 Kia four-door sedan she was driving crossed the center line shortly before 7 a.m. and collided with a southbound 2006 Kenworth cement truck.

The woman, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at Kona Community Hospital at 10:44 a.m. Her name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The driver of the cement truck, a 52-year-old Ka'u man, was not injured.

Police believe that speed was a contributing factor in the crash, but do not know yet whether alcohol or drugs were involved. An autopsy is planned to determine the exact cause of death.

The woman's death is the 10th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, compared with nine at this time last year.
