UH's Friesen one of NCAA Divers of Year

University of Hawai'i diver Emma Friesen was named one of the three NCAA Divers of the Year along with Ohio State's Chelsea Davis and Miami's Brittany Viola.

Friesen, a sophomore from North Vancouver, British Columbia, won the NCAA championship in the 1-meter springboard Thursday and placed sixth in the 3-meter Friday. She is the first UH diver to receive the NCAA Diver of the Year honor.

Davis won the NCAA 3-meter springboard, and Viola won the platform event.


BASEBALL

HPU SWEEPS DIXIE

Paul Nishimura hit a three-run homer and reliever BA Garner snuffed a seventh-inning rally as Hawai'i Pacific beat Dixie State, 5-3, yesterday to complete a sweep of a doubleheader at St. George, Utah.

HPU starter Toby Inouye worked six shutout innings before allowing a three-run homer to Kyle Pratt in the seventh. Garner replaced Inouye and got the final three outs for the Sea Warriors (22-7). Jordan Daley had three hits for the Rebels (13-15).

In the opener, Kaimi Mead scattered eight hits with four strikeouts and Aaron Asher homered to lead HPU to a 6-2 victory.

WASHINGTON TOPS HILO

Cam Nobles and Paul Dickey teamed on a four-hitter as Washington beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 5-0, yesterday at Husky Ballpark in Seattle.

Nobles worked seven innings, allowing two hits while striking out six and walking two for the Huskies (14-6).

Joe Davis had a two-hit shutout through six innings for the Vulcans (7-12) before giving up a solo homer to Kyle Conley and a two-run homer to Joey Dunn.


SOFTBALL

CHAMINADE SPLITS

Carolyn Fisher hit a solo homer and Chasity Senas a two-run single as Chaminade beat Grand Canyon, 6-3, yesterday in the first game of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader in Phoenix.

Chelsi Walls scattered 10 hits and Kasy'e Lalau pitched out of a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the seventh for the Silverswords (9-16, 4-10).

In the second game, the Antelopes (10-13-1, 5-5) got a five-hitter with seven strikeouts from Michelle Farrell to beat Chaminade, 5-1. Brandi Sasaki homered for the Silverswords' lone run.

BYU-HAWAI'I SPLITS

Crystal Dela Cruz and Bettye Doering hit successive two-run singles in the top of the fourth as Brigham Young-Hawai'i rallied past Dixie State, 5-4, yesterday to split a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at St. George, Utah.

Dela Cruz batted 3 for 4 and reliever Katresha Veazie pitched two scoreless innings to lift the Seasiders (8-23, 5-9).

In the opener, Haley Schumers pitched a five-inning no-hitter with seven strikeouts and Dabney McIntyre hit a grand slam to power the Rebels (17-14, 8-6) to an 8-0 victory.


SURFING

IRONS, POWERS ADVANCE

Hawai'i surfers Andy Irons and Roy Powers advanced to the fourth round of the Rip Curl Pro men's contest yesterday.

The third round was completed in 2- to 3-foot waves at Winkipop, Australia.

Powers advanced by defeating fellow Hawai'i surfer Pancho Sullivan, 12.16-7.13.

Irons advanced by defeating Brazil's Rodrigo Dornelles, 13.67-12.24.

Sullivan and Fred Patacchia Jr. of O'ahu's North Shore were eliminated in the third round.
