UH's Amanakis WAC Track Athlete of Week

University Hawai'i's Thalia Amanakis has been named the Western Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week.
Amanakis, a junior from Sydney, Australia, won the 400-meter hurdles at the Hornet Invitational in Sacramento, Calif. last week. She finished in 58.52 seconds to set a meet record and earn an NCAA regional qualifying time.
Amanakis also finished third in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best 13.95 seconds, just three one-hundredths of a second from the NCAA regional standard.
The Rainbow Wahine will compete in Saturday's Spring Break Open at Cooke Field.
SOFTBALL
HAWAI'I PACIFIC SWEEPS
Sherise Musquiz and Ashley Valine teamed on a six-hitter, and Casey Sugihara doubled, tripled and drove in two runs as Hawai'i Pacific beat Notre Dame de Namur, 8-0, yesterday to complete a sweep of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at Belmont, Calif.
Musquiz (10-1) allowed all six hits in six innings for the Sea Warriors (22-1, 9-1).
In the opener, Courtney Kessell and Valine teamed on a four-hitter as HPU won in six innings, 9-1.
Kessell (12-0) allowed three hits and a run while striking out eight in five innings.
Nicole Riviera and Krystal Plunkett each batted 4 for 4, with Riviera driving in four runs.
Cierra Keeney hit an RBI single for the lone run of the day for the Argos (15-18, 7-7).
CHAMINADE SWEPT
Michelle Farrell pitched a five-hitter with five strikeouts and Grand Canyon pounded out 17 hits to beat Chaminade, 11-0, yesterday and complete a sweep of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at Phoenix, Ariz.
Tana Holtorf and Yasmeen Watkins each had three hits and two RBIs for the Antelopes (12-13-1, 7-5).
Kelli-Grace Saniatan had two hits for the Silverswords (9-18, 4-12), who were the home team in the doubleheader.
In the opener, Randi Johns hit a two-run double and solo homer and the Antelopes amassed 16 hits in a 7-3 victory.
Skye Virtudes had two hits for Chaminade, which scored three runs in the bottom of the first for a brief 3-2 lead.
BYU-HAWAI'I SWEPT
Haley Schumers pitched a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts and had two hits and two RBIs as Dixie State defeated Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 8-2, in the opener of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at St. George, Utah.
Carli Jones doubled and homered for the Rebels (19-14, 10-6).
Katresha Veazie hit a two-run homer for the Seasiders (8-25, 5-11), who were the home team in the doubleheader.
In the second game, Schumers hit two solo homers and Jones added another solo shot as Dixie State rallied for a 13-5 victory.
Kimberly Artiaga and Athena Salinas hit successive two-run singles in the bottom of the first as BYUH jumped ahead 5-0. Dixie State, with Schumers and Jones hitting successive home runs, scored eight runs in the second to seize the momentum.
SURFING
POWERS ELIMINATED
Kaua'i's Roy Powers was eliminated in the fourth round of the Rip Curl Pro men's surfing contest yesterday at Winkipop, Australia.
Six heats of the fourth round were run yesterday in 2- to 4-foot waves, then the competition was halted due to deteriorating conditions.
California's Dane Reynolds defeated Powers, 14.4-9.33.
Kaua'i's Andy Irons has yet to complete his fourth-round heat. Irons, who will face Australia's Kai Otton, is now the only Hawai'i surfer remaining in the contest.
Among the other surfers still in the contest are 2007 world champion Mick Fanning of Australia, and eight-time former world champion Kelly Slater of Florida.
TENNIS
UCLA BEATS UH
UCLA's Tracy Lin, No. 47 in the latest ITA rankings, defeated No. 88 Sophie Kobuch of Hawai'i, 6-3, 6-2, yesterday to lead the eighth-ranked Bruins to a 7-0 victory at the UH Tennis Complex.
UCLA improved to 13-4, while UH fell to 0-14.
