EAST HONOLULU
Residents can express view on sewer rate hike

Advertiser Staff

The community will have another chance to weigh in on a proposed 16.7 percent sewer rate increase for East Honolulu on April 14.

Hawaii-American Water Co., a private company that provides sewer service to Hawai'i Kai, says the increase is needed to cover rising costs and continuing upgrades.

The Public Utilities Commission requested another meeting because not enough residents were alerted prior to a Jan. 7 meeting, Lee Mansfield, manager of Hawaii-American Water told the Hawai'i Kai Neighborhood Board on Tuesday.

If the new rates are approved by the PUC, the monthly sewer bill for single-family homes would increase over two years from $54.55 to $63.65. The monthly bill for multifamily residences would increase to $53.40 per month.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at Haha'ione Elementary School, 595 Pepe'ekeo St.
