Koloa faces challenge of change

Grade span: Pre-kindergarten through fifth grade

Enrollment: 188 students

Race/ethnicity enrollment: Filipino, 31 percent; part-Hawaiian, 23 percent; other, 30 percent; white, 10 percent; Hawaiian, 6 percent

Free and reduced-price lunch eligible: 49 percent

Special-education students: 10.4 percent

Computers on campus: 30 computers in a lab and about six computer stations in each classroom. Each teacher has a school-provided laptop. Students in grades three through five have access to electronic dictionaries and thesauruses.

What are you most proud of? "The growth of our teachers and our students," said Lindsey. "Our schoolwide agreements, like ICU (I See You Doing Something Good), make student behavior consistent for all staff and students. It makes it possible to maintain a quality school environment."

What is your biggest challenge? "The school was once known as one of the best schools on the island," Lindsey said. "But with four principals in one year, the school was in a constant state of flux. Now my biggest challenge is getting our school back on track and changing the perception of the community."

Special events: Science Night, Treasures of Koloa Night, Holiday Gingerbread night, Positive Behavior Support Carnival to celebrate student behavior

History: The school was established as the first government public school on Kaua'i in 1877. It is on the site of the state's first commercial sugar plantation.
