Flags to fly half-staff Monday in honor of Army Private Shizuya Hayashi

Gov. Linda Lingle has ordered U.S. and state flags at all state, county and federal buildings to be flown at half-staff on Monday from sunrise until sunset in honor of Army Private Shizuya Hayashi.

Hayashi was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 2000 for valiant service in World War II as a member of Company A, 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team.

"Our state and our nation have been blessed by the heroism and devotion to duty that Private Hayashi exhibited during World War II and throughout his life," said Governor Lingle. "Born to immigrant parents, Private Hayashi embodied the spirit of America's 'greatest generation' and the dedication and valor of the Nisei soldiers. He inspired generations of Americans, and his legacy and that of his comrades lives on in the brave men and women who serve our country today."

Visitation will be from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Hosoi Garden Mortuary, with a service at 3 p.m. The Hosoi visitation and service are open only to family, friends of Hayashi and his family, veterans of the 100th Infantry Battalion and 442nd Regimental Combat Team, and designated representatives of other veteran, business, civic and military organizations.

A vigil open to the public will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl.
