Honolulu has been chosen as the site of the Textile Society of America's 11th Biennial Symposium, Sept. 24-27: Textiles as Cultural Expressions. The symposium is expected to attract an international crowd of curators, collectors and textile enthusiasts. Museums and galleries throughout Honolulu presenting textile-related exhibits include the Honolulu Academy of Arts, Bishop Museum, the University of Hawai'i-Manoa Art Gallery, Louis Pohl Gallery, Mission Houses Museum, The ARTS at Marks Garage and the East-West Center Gallery.

Look for an international textile marketplace with unusual wearable art and textiles, open for two days only — the booths are already sold out.

The symposium is open to the public and offers unsurpassed opportunities for Island textile lovers. Registration is online at: www.textilesoci ety.org.

FIND A BRA, FIGHT BREAST CANCER

One would expect the statistics to improve, yet every year it is reported that, yes, still, more than 80 percent of women wear the wrong size bra. Lingerie company Wacoal is doing its best to improve that statistic with a complimentary Fit for the Cure event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 4 at Nordstrom in Ala Moana Center. Wacoal will donate $2 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer research and outreach programs for every woman who participates, with an additional $2 donation for every Wacoal, DKNY Underwear or Donna Karan Intimates bra purchased. Those who attend can also sign up for a monthly self breast exam reminder. Appointments are recommended: 941-2345.

HELP FOR HAIR

As we segue from North Shore surf season to summers in the sea, hair can take a real beating. All the surfing, paddling, swimming and sunning is especially hard on color-treated hair, often resulting in dry, brittle, faded, lifeless-looking locks. That's why three of the nation's most coveted hair care lines have recently introduced new treatments to protect beach-bound hair.

Frederic Fekkai's Summer Hair collection now includes SunShine Shield Spray, a fine mist that is said to preserve hair color with spray-on UV protection while adding shine. Fekkai calls it a sunscreen for the hair. It sells for $22 at Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Sephora.

Kerastase has just introduced its Chroma Riche collection for dry or highlighted color-treated hair. A UV filter and Vitamin E derivative are said to protect the hair from color fading while locking in moisture. It comes in a masque ($58) or shampoo and conditioner ($34 each), sold at J Salon in Chinatown, CHOP Salon in Restaurant Row, W Salon in Ala Moana Center and Salon Blanc in the Hokua building.

The Frizz-Ease collection by John Frieda also recently introduced Weather Works, a shampoo, conditioner and sealant that are said to offer UV protection and "shielding technology." They sell at Wal-Mart stores for $4.94.

PAULA BEGOUN'S 'BESTS'

Paula Begoun, who is known as "The Cosmetics Cop," has been a beauty editor for decades. She is probably best known for her books "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me," which have seen multiple updates and printings. She now has a respected online advice column called The Beauty Bulletin (find it at www.cosmeticscop.com) and a herd of researchers and testers to assist her with her ratings of everything from hair care products and moisturizers to serums and cuticle oils.

Of course, she also has her own line of cosmetics now, but she is still considered a reliable source; so much so that she makes an annual media tour each spring. In preparation for her media tour, she prepares a list of "Best Of's" from a wide variety of categories, listing her favorite "inexpensive" and "expensive" products.

Here are some of her picks:

Best water-soluble cleansers for all skin types: CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser (12 ounces, $11.49), La Mer The Cleansing Lotion (6.7 ounces, $65).

Best scrubs: Olay Definity Pore Refining Scrub (5 ounces, $10), Dior Exfoliating Face Scrub (2.5 ounces, $31).

Best makeup removers: Neutrogena Oil-Free Makeup Remover (5.5 ounces, $7), Bobbi Brown Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover (3.4 ounces, $22).

Best moisturizers/anti-wrinkle: Olay Regenerist Perfecting Cream (1.7 ounces, $19), Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Night Cream (1.4 ounces, $17.49), Clinique Repairwear Intensive Night Lotion (1.7 ounces, $47.50), Estee Lauder CP+ Perfectionist (1 ounce, $55).

Best mineral sunscreens and daytime moisturizers with sunscreen: Dove Energy Glow Brightening Moisturizer SPF 15 (1.7 ounces, $11), Good Skin All Calm Gentle Sunscreen SPF 25 (1.7 ounces, $12), Rodan & Fields Reverse Protect (1.7 ounces, $35).
