HAWAII BRIEFS
Retirement site struck by illness

Advertiser Staff

The state Health Department is investigating reports of a Norwalk-like virus outbreak in a Hawai'i Kai retirement community, officials said yesterday.

At least several residents of the retirement community became ill this week and have been tested for the virus, a Health Department spokeswoman said. She was not aware which facility was affected.

The tests results are not yet available, the spokeswoman said.

Noroviruses, including the Norwalk virus, are a group of related viruses that cause acute gastroenteritis in humans.

During World War II, Hayashi, of Pearl City, charged up a hill toward German positions on Nov. 29, 1943, and killed 20 enemy soldiers and captured four more near Cerasuolo, Italy.

A vigil open to the public will be from 6 to 10 p.m. today at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl.

PAHOA WOMAN INDICTED IN CRASH

HILO, Hawai'i — A Big Island grand jury has indicted a 46-year-old Pahoa woman in connection with a single-car crash that killed a man in Leilani Estates in Puna last year.

Tuesday Davis was indicted for second-degree negligent homicide and leaving the scene of an accident involving death or serious bodily injury.

David B. McDaniel, 44, of Kalapana, died on Jan. 26, 2007 from injuries suffered in the crash on Jan. 2.

Police said a Pahoa woman was driving a 1987 Subaru four-door station wagon east on Leilani Avenue shortly before 7 p.m. when the right front tire became loose, causing the woman to lose control and run off the road into a ditch.

McDaniel and a 55-year-old Pahoa man who was riding in the front seat were both injured; McDaniel later died.

If convicted on the charge of leaving the scene of an accident involving serious injuries, Davis faces a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. If convicted on the negligent homicide charge, Davis faces up to five years in prison.

Davis was convicted in 2001 and again in 2002 of driving under the influence of an intoxicant, according to state court records.
