HPU softball falls in quarterfinals of tournament

Lindsay Warren hit a two-run single in the top of the seventh inning as Humboldt State defeated Hawai'i Pacific, 4-3, today in a quarterfinal game of the Mizuno Tournament of Champions in Turlock, Calif.

Natalie Galletly scored three runs and batted 2 for 2, including a solo homer in the first inning to lead the Lumberjacks (30-12).

Ciera Senas had two hits, including an RBI double, and Casey Sugihara and Krystal Plunkett each had RBI singles for the Sea Warriors (26-5), who scored all of their runs in the third to take a 3-1 lead.

Lizzy Prescott (24-5) pitched a five-hitter with six strikeouts for Humboldt State, which went on to win the 18-team tournament by beating Cal State Dominguez Hills, 1-0, in the final.

Courtney Kessell (15-2) suffered the loss, working 6° innings and allowing all four runs while striking out two and walking five.

Also yesterday, Chico State beat Chaminade, 8-0, in a bronze bracket semifinal.
