KAPOLEI — Timely hitting came early for the Mililani High School softball team, and it paid off in a 6-2 win over Kapolei yesterday morning.

Courtney Abear, a senior first baseman, batted 3 for 3 with three doubles and an RBI for Mililani (4-1), ranked first in The Advertiser's Top 10 poll. Makani Duhaylonsod scattered six hits, struck out five and added two singles in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West game.

"We played good and we bounced back good," said Abear, referring to Wednesday's loss to Leilehua. "We executed and it was a good team effort."

Kapolei, ranked fourth, is 3-2.

Tied 1-1, Jaimee Aiwohi led off the second inning with a single and advanced to second base after Celina Garces drew a walk.

Abear then doubled home Aiwohi to give the Trojans a 2-1 lead. Rebecca Lee was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Kristi Oshiro made it 3-1 with an RBI double that scored Garces. Abear was thrown out at home.

Chanelle Senas then hit a two-run double that made it 5-1.

"Today, we hit well," Mililani coach Rose Antonio said. "A lot of timely hitting and runners in scoring position."

Kapolei cut into the deficit in the third. Dorian Acierto singled to lead off the inning, stole second and third base and scored on Deja Manubag's grounder that was mishandled by the Mililani third baseman to make it 5-2.

But Duhaylonsod allowed just two hits and struck out four the rest of the way. Kapolei threatened with runners at first and third in the sixth, but Duhaylonsod got a popout and groundout to end the inning.

Kapolei coach Tony Saffery said early errors hurt his team, but "we tightened up on defense. We were right in there."

Courtney Senas scored on a passed ball to give Mililani a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Hurricanes tied the score in the bottom half when Ka'ili Smith singled home Tehani Ka'aihue.

Aiwohi drove in Chanelle Senas in the fifth to give the Trojans a 6-2 lead.

Kapolei sophomore Kahana Higa threw 5 2/3 innings of relief, giving up just one run and striking out two.

"She kept them off balance," Saffery said. "She did a great job."
