Robinson helps UH sweep LaTech

Kate Robinson hit two home runs in the first game, then scattered 10 hits to win the second game as No. 17 Hawai'i swept Louisiana Tech, 4-1 and 6-4, yesterday in a Western Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at Ruston, La.

Robinson hit a solo homer in the fourth and a two-run homer in the sixth, and Courtney Baughman and Jessica Morton teamed on an eight-hitter for the Rainbow Wahine (28-11 and 4-1). Baughman (12-6) worked the first five innings, giving up a run and six hits while striking out four, and Morton finished with two shutout innings and four strikeouts.

Amberly Waits batted 3 for 3 for the Bulldogs (18-19, 1-4).

In the second game, Robinson (12-3) struck out six and walked one, and Audrey Andrade keyed a four-run second with a two-run single for UH.

LaTech threatened in the bottom of the seventh as Regan Clark's three-run homer cut the deficit to 6-4 before Robinson escaped further trouble.

KESSELL CARRIES HPU

Courtney Kessell pitched her 11th shutout of the season as Hawai'i Pacific defeated Cal State San Bernardino, 5-0, yesterday in the Tournament of Champions at Turlock, Calif.

Kessell (15-1) struck out three and walked two. Anuhea Young hit a two-run homer and Nicole Kalakau added a solo shot for the Sea Warriors.

Later, Marissa Trujillo hit an RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth as Cal State Monterey Bay scored a 2-1 win over HPU (26-4).

Also yesterday, Cal State San Bernardino beat Chaminade, 1-0; Cal State Stanislaus beat Chaminade, 5-0, and Cal State Monterey Bay beat Chaminade, 8-0, in five innings. Details were not available.

The 18-team tournament winds up today.


BASEBALL

HAWAI'I-HILO SWEEPS

Dayne Ogawa batted 5 for 5 with seven RBIs as Hawai'i-Hilo defeated Saint Martin's, 20-4, yesterday in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader at Lacey, Wash.

Ogawa had a pair of RBI singles, a two-run double and a three-run homer for the Vulcans (11-14). A.J. Satele and Matt Haasenritter each added three RBIs.

Andrew Braegelmann had three hits for Saint Martin's (12-14).

In the second game, Satele's two-run single sparked a six-run seventh inning that rallied Hilo to a 6-2 victory.

Kekoa Lee, Jeffrey Germain and Tyler Safford teamed on a five-hitter for the Vulcans.

HAWAI'I PACIFIC TIES

Cheynne Hirota hit a solo homer and drove in three runs as Hawai'i Pacific played host San Francisco State to an 11-11 tie in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader halted by darkness.

In the opener, Nick Nyman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth, lifting San Francisco State (7-24-1) over HPU (23-12-1).

Danny Lee and Andrew Sramek hit two-run singles for HPU.

DIVING



WIKTORSSON 14TH

University of Hawai'i senior Mats Wiktorsson finished 14th in platform diving yesterday at the NCAA Championships in Federal Way, Wash.

Wiktorsson scored 312.60 points during the morning preliminaries and qualified at the No. 14 spot. He then scored 336.40 in the consolation finals, giving him 14th place and All-America honorable-mention honors.
