Swimming: Aussie charged with assault after nightclub flap

SYDNEY, Australia — Swimmer Nick D'Arcy was charged today with assault in a nightclub fight that occurred several hours after he was named to Australia's Olympic team for the Beijing Games.

Police said D'Arcy was arrested and charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm. He was granted conditional bail to appear in court on April 21. A police spokesperson said the charges carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

Swimming Australia earlier coinfirmed that D'Arcy, a 20-year-old butterfly swimmer who set a Commonwealth record during the eight-day Olympic trials that ended Saturday, was involved in a nightclub incident during the weekend.

Simon Cowley, a three-time swimming gold medalist at the 1998 Commonwealth Games, suffered a broken jaw and a broken nose in the altercation.
