Construction students provide park benches

Several county tennis courts are getting sturdy new benches thanks to students in King Kekaulike High School's Construction Academy.

The students completed 12 new park benches for the Department of Parks and Recreation, with half already installed at the Kahului Community Center tennis courts. The other benches will be used at the War Memorial Complex tennis courts in Wailuku.

The student carpenters also plan to finish six more benches for the Wells Park tennis courts in Wailuku.

The project, led by Maui Community College instructor Andy Carson and King Kekaulike teacher Jim O'Brien, allows students to gain construction industry skills while learning the value of community service, according to a news release.
