Big Island police fire shots at speeding car

Advertiser Staff

Big Island vice detectives fired an undisclosed number of shots at a car in Puna last night as the vehicle allegedly sped toward an officer.

Police said the car was struck by several shots, but there were no indications that anyone was hit.

Police said the detectives were trying to serve a search warrant on the car with two people inside at the intersection of Kahakai Boulevard and Moana Street in the Hawaiian Beaches subdivision at about 7:25 p.m. when the vehicle "accelerated rapidly toward one of the officers present, and officers fired at the vehicle striking it several times," according to a statement released by police.

The vehicle was later found abandoned in another area of the subdivision, and police arrested a 27-year-old Pahoa woman who was allegedly in the car when the shots were fired. Authorities are still searching for the second person in the car, police said.

The 27-year-old woman who was arrested after the shooting has a felony drug conviction dating back to 2000, and four more felony drug or drug paraphernalia convictions in 2003. She remains in police custody.

Police said the Internal Affairs Division has opened an investigation, which is standard procedure when shots have been fired.

Police ask that anyone with information about the case call Det. Alston Kimura at 808-961-2278.
